Art and Design

Maybe you've faced it before – a new house with an empty room or two. This room is just crying out for some furniture. So off you go to purchase a sofa you admire - then a chair. Or perhaps you purchase a full living room set complete with tables and rugs. With delivery a few weeks off you can just picture your living room (and not surprisingly, it looks just like the showroom). The delivery day arrives and you can't wait to cut the tags off of your new furnishings. You may have to position the sofa a few times to get it just so, but all in all, you're pretty satisfied – until you notice there's no art on the wall. And so you decide to buy some art that matches the sofa. I cringe a little while I write this, but in reality that is how many of us choose art. In fact, little confession, I still have art in my house that I bought because the frames matched!

If you have also considered buying art in an afterthought, you're not alone. We have all been taught that accessories finish off a room. In fact, if you've ever watched a design show, you'll notice that some professional designers decide on the art once fabric, furniture and rugs have been selected. So maybe we've all been brainwashed to believe that filling our space with art doesn't require much planning – just the ability to carry a swatch of fabric to a store. Well, just for a moment, I'd like you to think about your art and why you might acquire it sooner rather than later.

Art inspires creativity. First choose art that appeals to you, and then let your furniture and accessory purchases be influenced by the art you have selected. This shift in viewpoint allows for freedom of expression. Through the process of seeking out new art, and finding something you'd like to live with, you open your mind to all the new possibilities. Perhaps an abstract piece of art inspires you to consider an eclectic collection of furniture instead of a uniform suite. Maybe art with cool beach tones allows you to consider that slip covered furniture with a nautical appeal. Or a tropical print encourages you to use a hand-painted floorcloth in vivid hues in your new artistically inspired room.

Consider also the structural elements in your room. Many living areas have unique architectural details that historically have been used to display important art. By only focusing on furniture placement or accessorizing, you may lose sight of some of your home's great details. If the architectural details are not what they once were, before you rip it out, liven it up. Apply a mosaic design or faux finish to your fireplace surround. When you're thinking about changing things break out of the familiar and experiment with your creativity.

For some creative inspiration, find the nearest child. Generally, young children are much more free to express themselves than some adults, and when it comes to design, I can say from experience that they'll have their own unique opinions on what goes in their rooms. Take a cue from your child's artwork when you design their rooms. This way they are more inclined to love it when you're done. Gather together several of their favorite paintings or sketches, and note their favorite color, or emerging themes. You can copy these same themes through painted fabric, a wall mural, unique stained glass for the window, a floorcloth or even a quilted wall hanging. Don't forget to frame and hang the original artwork that inspired their new design.

So set out to design your living spaces with art as forethought. You will appreciate the art for what it adds to the overall project as well as the positive feeling you experience when you see it. And then you may begin to wonder why you ever tried to buy art that matches that pillow with the odd purple color. Happy art collecting!

Furniture Slipcovers Can Transform Your Home In An Instant!

These days furniture slipcovers can be found for seats of all shapes and sizes, from wing backed chairs to sectional sofas, from loveseats to ottomans. Fitting a new slipcover to a favorite piece of furniture offers a simple yet effective way to instantly improve its appearance and give it a fresh lease of life. Ready made slipcovers for sofas and chairs are the cheapest option, but even having fitted slipcovers custom made can be relatively inexpensive, especially when compared to the costs of re-upholstery or buying a whole new suite. A real benefit of a slipcover is that it can be easily replaced whenever you fancy a change, or if it needs to be washed.

Furniture in many rooms can be slipcovered. In the family room, sofa slipcovers, as well as looking pretty, have the practical function of protecting your existing fabric from everyday wear and tear. Why not buy a few sets of discount slipcovers if you've got pets of small children? That can be an affordable way to always ensure you have spare furniture covers in case of accidents! Most modern slipcover materials are designed to be easy to care for and are fully machine washable. It can be worth spending a bit more on hardwearing fabrics such as cotton, particularly for seats that get used regularly. Why not look for matching recliner chair covers for a stylish, coordinated look?

Stretch slipcovers are also available for other rooms. For example, dining chair slipcovers can be purchased to protect good quality upholstery from food or drink spills. They come in various colors and patterns. Many people like to have a set of luxury covers to add a touch of elegance to dinner parties or special occasions. Folding and kitchen coverings are widely available too. If you're tired of the appearance of your home, fitting some new slipcovers is an easy way to give an entire room a makeover without the inconvenience of decorating.

A new slipcover can enhance the look and feel of a whole room, with minimal fuss, and can be changed whenever you fancy a new image!

Ideas to Give Old Furniture New Life

The best thing about old furniture is the new life you can give it. It doesn't take much talent – just a little creativity and patience if you've never taken on a furniture project before.

Accept this challenge: instead of throwing out that old chest of drawers from your child's room, think of a new use for it. Recycling furniture can be a lot of fun, plus it's a good way to get a new look at a fraction of the cost. If you are not happy with the finished product, start over or then give in to purchase a new furniture piece.

Think about that old chest of drawers. Is there a drawer that's broken? Maybe you can take out that drawer and create a shelf from the opening. Would it make a nice TV stand if it was just a little taller? Consider screwing finials that you can find in your local discount store onto the bottom to create "legs" or "feet."

And never underestimate the power of a coat of paint! Old furniture gets a quick update when painted. If you like the shabby chic look, tatter the fresh paint job a bit by sanding around corners and other heavy use areas to create a worn look. If it's your first time to try this furniture painting technique, invest in an inexpensive kit that can be found at any retail discount store.

If you are really creative and not afraid to try new things with your old furniture, you can create some funky new accessories for your home. Use an old dresser as a sink basin for your bathroom. Use the headboard or footboard from a twin size bed as the back of a bench.

Giving your old furniture a new look does not always include creating a new function for it. For instance, drape and tuck fabric over an old sofa or love seat to give it a "slipcovered" look. Or, hot glue some fabric on top of the old rattan panels on the coffee table you've had for years. Trim it out by hot gluing some braided trim around the edges and you've created a new look for the table.

If your piece of furniture was painted but you'd like to give it a stained look, give it a try. Most woods are easily stripped of paint and stain can be applied in the color and intensity of your choice. Just follow the directions supplied by the stain manufacturer.

Give the lacquer-look furniture popular in past years an up to date look by using a combination of painting and staining. To get a brown leather look, brush your lacquer furniture lightly first with sand paper just enough to rough up the surface so the paint will adhere better. Then, use a red primer color spray paint on the furniture. Once the primer dries, use an oil-based brown stain and a plastic bag to create the leathery look. Working with a small area at a time, use a sponge "brush" to paint on the stain. Crinkle a plastic bag and open it up. Press the crinkled bag on top of the stain and sweep the bag quickly off the furniture. The motion will pull the stain around, creating the lines associated with leather. Kits are also available for this technique.

Understanding Storage Cabinets Better

There is much you need to learn before you decide on the right method of storage for yourself. Deciding on whether to utilize the various public storage facilities out in the world today or using the storage cabinets incorporated into the daily basis of your home will allow you to make better use of the space you have come to know best as your residence. However, there are many different shapes and sizes of the latter that are far cheaper, but not able to handle all the materials that end up being put into storage at a particular building.

A storage cabinet will make the perfect addition to the unorganized workroom. The storage cabinet can be the most helpful utility in the case of supplying an invaluable capacity to hold on to whatever you find necessary to store for as long as you need it held inside the safety of those spacious bins, and available in a variety of colors and sizes to meet the many different objects of varying proportions, possibly even using these storage cabinets to house more of these kinds of items.

Even good for storing those spare parts that become a necessity when you're busy putting together a means to fixing your automobile, or perhaps that equipment that will allow you indulge in those urges to create various craft pieces, a means to producing your own artwork or functional pieces of furniture.

Sometimes we all need that personal space that will conceivably present an opportunity to understand mechanical and other skills that are utilities in some of the modern parts of life.

Perhaps it is fitting to have one of these handy items in the garage, where the cabinet can be manufactured from metal or plastic, but needing to be capable of withstanding the heavy duty use of much continued punishment.

Maybe you require these cabinets to store those small goods such as potatoes for the sake of freshness. Whether you need something to perhaps fit a music collection into, or maybe you require the cabinets for storage of a more mundane purpose, still necessary for keeping track of small items that might get lost otherwise.

There is a need to also make sure that you acknowledge any budgetary constraints that might limit your progress. You need to be aware as a shopper of all the options that you would be able to utilize to the best of benefiting yourself by finding the best possible bargain, and you need time and patience to understand how to fulfill the role that requires a storage cabinet to better make use of the space given, a way to safely house those items that have a special meaning to you in some way.

Those containers that can come to be called upon for storage purposes are perfect for in-home storage, whether in the garage or even a laundry room, and can even be incorporated into your office functions as well. There are many kinds of containers that will allow you to have a compact way to place things into a state where you have no need to worry about any items location, as long as it can also be within quick and easy reach, and you won't need to worry about spacing constraints either with a storage cabinet inside your home.

Choosing Your Sofa

Changing your old sofa is the same as removing the old plastic covering that has been hanging on your living room lamp for say, 5 years. Oh...the only design you are seeing now is the newest stain your son has added to the pile. And have you thought of how hard it is for you to get out from your couch? That's too bad. These only mean one thing- its time to change your sofa.

It might have taken you some time before choosing the sofa from the furniture shop the last time you bought your couch. Only to find out that everything were all in vain. Your sofa was not as nice as you first thought of it to be. To ease out the trouble of choosing your sofa, here are some guidelines to make the work lighter:

- The size. Before doing anything, decide on what size should you buy. This doesn't necessarily mean that you use your room size as the basis. The primary reason for this is to avoid the chance that your sofa doesn't fit the door. Or if you are leaving on the second floor or so, it may be due to the size of the stairs or the elevator. Again, it is not only the length of the sofa that matters, check also on its width and height and maximum size that your room will allow.

- The color. It is not always advisable to pick the color that looks strong. As far as home designing is concerned, neutral colors still remain to be the ideal choice. Then if you want to capture those hot and striking colors then take advantage of the sofa accessories. Throw pillows are much less expensive and they may be great additions to your home décors. Plus, you can always change the looks of your living room by rearranging your pillows or by changing their pillow case colors.

- Assess your lifestyle. Consider your lifestyle and start from there when choosing the upholstery of your sofa. Also think about which part of the house will your sofa be placed. Will it be placed in the family room or in the formal living room? Having kids may also add to your reconsiderations. For the longevity of the furniture, avoid delicate upholstery like that of satin.

- The pattern. If you prefer plain design then it is best to narrow down your choices to more toned down colors. However, choosing patterned upholstery is another thing. Choose a pattern that may conceal "add-on" designs (those that are patented by your son). With this in mind, you may choose multi-colored pattern. This will help you hide the dirt and stains that your children have created.

- Examine the furniture. While you're on-site, allow yourself ample time to examine the furniture itself. The underlying construction and the over-all sofa make up. Ensure yourself that you have tried the feel of the sofa. Sit on it like you are at you own home. This will give you a better idea of what the sofa may feel like. If possible, invite others to try the sofa as well. This will make you see the comfortability level of the furniture.

- Check other things. Inspect the accents of the sofa. Check the trimmings, the wood used in construction, the paddings, and the over-all design.

The question of- "will it match my room?" may arise. It is best to address this question and other issues as well. If you see some defaults, then look for another sofa. After all, choosing a defaulted sofa is not suggested in the guidelines.

How To Choose A Curio Cabinet

Curio cabinets have become a delight in themselves as they showcase your favorite things and mementos to friends and family, keep all your dear treasures in one place to admire them in wonderment everyday, or protect your growing collection of porcelain dolls from your 5-year old.

Curio cabinets started as places to keep curios - defined in the dictionary as curious or unusual objects of art or knickknacks and whatnots that are perhaps worthy of collecting because of their oddity. This definition could, of course, include silver spoons from Alaska, all assortments of wedding and christening favors, crystals, face masks from Africa and possibly even shrunken heads from the Amazons of Ecuador and Peru.

Nowadays, however, you can use curio cabinets for anything:

- Show off your family's sporting interests by displaying your son's bowling trophies next to your husbands autographed baseballs.

- House your priceless family heirlooms - such as, great grandma's turqoise and silver comb, grandpa's golden pen, mum's old sapphire brooch which you wore on your wedding day and your son's first baby photo.

- Or perhaps, protect from dust and grime the brass alto saxophone that you know you'll learn to play one day in your retirement years.

But how do you choose the curio cabinet that's just right for you? Ask yourself the following questions below and find out how.

Tips on how to choose a curio cabinet

1. The first question you should ask when buying a curio cabinet is: What kind of curios will I put in it? If it is a tall brass alto saxophone, then you need to get a tall, traditional curio cabinet with fitted glass doors to keep the dust out and with removable glass shelves to make room for your favorite musical instrument.

2. How much light is there at the spot where you are going to put your curio cabinet? Is it in the sunroom with plenty of natural light or is it in a dark corner of the house? If the latter then you need an illuminated cabinet to brighten the corner as well as provide accent lighting to your displays.

3. How big a space do you have for your curio cabinet?

- Is the space amply high and wide? Then you might want to get a traditional, dark cherry curio cabinet with generous measurements of 44W x 17D x 79H inches.

- If narrower, then a more contemporary curio cabinet with practical urban living measurements of 24W x 12D x 76H inches may be better.

- If low and wide such as in a family room or den, then a golden oak console curio cabinet measuring 56W x 13D x 30H inches is probably what you need.

- And if angled in a corner, you may want a curio cabinet that can be snugly placed in a corner and probably measuring around 28W x 16D x 72H inches.

4. The other question to ask is - Do you want to match the look of your curio cabinet with the other furniture in the room?

- If you want to maintain a traditional look, then you might want to choose from grand old fashioned designs with bevelling, hand-carved details and dark timber finishes.

- If the room is contemporary, then you might want the clean lines and lighter timber finishes of a more urbanized curio cabinet with lots of mirror and glass.

5. What type of wood or non-wood appeals to you?

- If affordability is a consideration and you do not mind the look of MDF or engineered wood, then you might choose a curio cabinet made of strenghtened pressed particle board and topped with timber veneer or laminate.

- If you feel that a solid wood curio cabinet sounds like a good investment, then you should get a curio cabinet made from the more popular oak or maple - hardwoods that can only gain character and charm as they age.

6. And last but not least, what is your budget?

- Are you prepared to splurge on a Louis XV-inspired Pulaski curio cabinet selling for $2000 so that you can have a spectacular accent piece that can transform your entire living room experience?

- Or do you just want a simple wall curio cabinet - one that you can get for $20 at ebay to put your dog figurine collection?

The Esteemed Bookcase

Many homes and living rooms are made complete by the addition of a bookcase – its passive presence both creates a lived-in feeling and lets homeowners put pieces of their own character on its shelves. The installation of a bookcase is often the crowning moment of interior decoration; one of the last things to be set up after moving into a new house. Consequently, choosing the right piece of furniture can take a lot of deliberation and trips to the department store.

The wide and diverse selection can make it difficult to pick a good bookcase, if only for the bombardment of good design ideas. These days, bookshelves are as small and as big as you can imagine, and they are made in so many shapes, colours and materials that there is bound to be a good candidate for your own living room or bedroom – or even every room of your house!

A well suited bookcase should adequately reflect the mood of a room, so it is important to decide before you go shopping just what you want the place to feel like. For a rustic atmosphere, a wooden shelf could do the trick. Are you more modern in taste? Try out a sleek and slim aluminum case, and it might satisfy that simplistic, functional urge.

What many people don't consider when choosing a bookcase is to consult a furniture builder. There are a great deal of builders out there, who use a range of different materials and unique designs. If the store products aren't impressing you, or you have a particular idea in mind for your shelves, it might be wise to speak with a builder. This way, your shelf can suit your home, your style and you aren't likely to bump into the same one at a friend's dinner party!

Update Your Home With Slipcovers

Using a slipcover is definitely a great way to give your old furniture a new look. In fact, slipcovers are often referred to as clothing for your furniture. And when you think about it, just like clothing, a slipcover protects and decorates. For its protective features, the slipcover is a wise choice for those with active lifestyles and homes with children. From a decorating standpoint, adding a slipcover can be much more cost effective than purchasing new furniture.

Assuming your furniture is in good condition but doesn't blend well with the home's current color scheme, a slipcover may be the solution to try. Because slipcovers come in a wide variety of colors and fabrics it is easy to find just the right fit for any décor and budget. Just as with clothing, care instructions vary. Many slipcovers are machine washable and dryable while others must be dry cleaned. Be sure to read the care instructions carefully so that there are no surprises down the road. In general, a slipcover will be easy to remove from your furniture for periodic cleaning.

Fabric selection for a slipcover is extremely important. In general, the heavier the fabric, the more expensive the slipcover will be. While medium-weight fabrics tend to work nicely for slipcovers, there are many options available. Fabrics available include waffle textures, elegant silk and chenille just to name a few. A popular option is to use fabric that matches draperies or some other home furnishing and have a slipcover custom made from that exact fabric. A wide variety of home decorating fabrics can be found in the market-place. If you decide to purchase fabric and have a slipcover custom made, be sure to wash a fabric swatch first to test for durability and shrinkage. A well-made sofa can have its life extended for many years with some new fabric.

As discussed previously, slipcovers come in many varieties and can be loose fitting, ready-made, semi-custom fitted or completely custom fitted. Understandably, fitted slipcovers are more expensive because they are customized exactly for your furniture. Ready-made slipcovers can be more cost effective and are available from a number of sources. One company, Sure Fit, is America's largest supplier of ready-made slipcovers. They have hundreds of upholstery quality styles, patterns and colors to choose from. By doing a bit of research online, you will find many options available.

One of the most common pieces of furniture to display a slipcover is the sofa. A sofa slipcover is perfect for a comfortable but not-so-attractive sofa. If you still have a sofa from your college days, or have passed down an old sofa to the kids, a sofa slipcover is an easy way to change the look and get a few more years out of an older but trusty piece of furniture. Remember, when you want to change the look without spending the money for a new sofa, a new slipcover is both attractive and economical. And, if you have purchased an expensive sofa and have kids or messy adults in the house, a sofa slipcover is a good precaution to protect your investment.

The benefits of slipcovers are many. Slipcovers are a budget friendly way to update your home's look, they can be replaced easily when it comes time to redecorate, they are easy to clean and they give your valuable furniture protection from spills and general wear and tear. Before throwing out that old sofa, consider your options with slipcovers.

What You Should Know About Cabinets

Cabinets are one of the most important aspects of any kitchen. Quality cabinets can increase a the selling value of a home, while poorly constructed ones can detract from not only the value of a home but also the beauty and efficiency of a kitchen. In this article you'll learn more about the different types of cabinets, as well as what to do if the cabinets in your kitchen are less than ideal.

There are many different types of cabinets, made out of many different types of materials. The most popular material is, of course, wood. The least expensive type of woods that cabinets are sometimes crafted from include choices like poplar, birch and maple. If you go with one of these woods, you will probably want to paint your cabinets. Some homeowners choose to go with designer effects like faux finishing to give lower grades of wood a classic and sophisticated look. A step up from these low grade woods would be choices like oak and pine -- durable woods that are fairly affordable.

Looking to spend a bit more for high quality wood? Then you should consider woods such as maple, cherry, or hickory. Which one is best for you depends on your personal preferences and what you feel looks best in your kitchen. Now, if you're looking for a cabinet material that's truly spectacular, you could go with expensive choices like mahogany, walnut or ebony. Not only are these woods exotic and attractive, they're durable and long-lasting.

Just as there are lots of various woods cabinets can be crafted from, there are also various types of cabinetry to suit every price range and preference. Stock cabinetry is the most affordable type of cabinetry, however you won't have a lot to choose from as far as design is concerned. These types of cabinets are made in large quantities in a factory. The next step up from stock cabinetry is semi-custom cabinetry. While these are also factory made, you are given more choices in the size, material and finish of your cabinets. The third, and most expensive type of cabinets are custom cabinets. Custom cabinets are crafted especially for you and meet your every specification and need from start to finish. This type of cabinetry takes longer to build and costs a lot more than the other two options, but can be worth the time and expense.

Maybe you're a homeowner who has cabinets that are less than satisfactory. If so, there are two choices available to you. You can have your existing cabinets removed and replaced or you can simply refinish your cabinets. Which option you choose will have a lot to do with your kitchen storage needs and the quality of your cabinets. If your cabinets are crafted from a low-quality wood and you would prefer a higher grade, then replacement is probably your best bet. If your cabinets do not provide you with the storage space you need, this may be another reason to replace. However, if your existing cabinets are made from an acceptable wood and provide you with enough storage, then refinishing, also known as refacing, might be the way to go.

Refinishing your cabinets is something you can hire a contractor to do, or handle yourself. The first step is to remove your cabinet doors and all hardware, then label the inside of each door with a sticky note. The reason for labeling is so that it will be easy to replace your cabinets when you're done refinishing. After you've labeled everything and removed all the hardware, it's time to remove the finish from the cabinet doors. This can be achieved with a varnish removal product purchased from your local home improvement store. These products can be quite toxic so always be sure to wear proper safety equipment like goggles and gloves. Also, it's crucial to ventilate the room with plenty of fresh air. If you can, doing the work outdoors is an even safer option.

After the varnish remover has done its job, rinse the wood clean and let it dry. Once dry, sand the cabinets to a smooth finish, then brush away all excess sanding dust. You might want to start with a coarse sandpaper to smooth rough areas and finish with a finer grade for an even finish. After the sanding is complete, you can apply the stain or varnish of your choice. If you use more than one coat, allow each coat to dry before adding another. Make sure the stain is completely dry before touching the cabinets. Once you're sure the cabinets are fully dry, you can reinstall them in your kitchen. To give them a shiny new look, replace your old hardware with new hardware.

No matter what type of kitchen you have, good cabinetry is a must. Not only can the right cabinets add to the look of the room, they can give you all the space you need for storing your kitchen related items. If you ever sell your home, you can be sure that prospective buyers are going to examine the kitchen cabinets! With that in mind, take a good look at your existing cabinetry. Is it all you think it should be? If not, there are many options available to you. For ideas, check out some books on the subject or flip through some home improvement magazines. Even a leisurely trip to your local home improvement store can be enough to get you thinking about the upgrades you want to make to your cabinets. Whether you do the work yourself or hire someone to do it for you, you'll find that the end result is definitely worth the time and expense!

Bakers Racks And The Dorm Room

Furniture options are very limited when a young man or woman first heads off to the great unknown otherwise known as college. Dining tables, chairs, and even a simple sofa are all luxury items in a dorm room and most often impractical furniture choices. Of course, there are companies that recognize the cramped confines of the dorm room which is why there are specially designed pieces of furniture that cater to the college student. A very common theme of this specialty dorm room furniture genre is storage, storage, and more storage. While quite unconventional for a dorm room, quality-made bakers racks may actually be the perfect purchase for this particular time in a young person's life.

Yes, premium bakers racks are traditional furniture choices for the kitchen or dining area in a home. However, one of the specific design features of the baker's rack is storage space and this is precisely what the prospective college student needs most in their dorm room. In many cases, the rack will come in a box and require assembly which is actually a great thing because it cuts down on the room needed to transport the piece to campus.

Once the baker's rack is assembled (if necessary), there are a number of very practical possibilities the student has with respect to potential use. One such potential use is for the storage of cooking utensils, foodstuffs, and other related supplies. While most dorm rooms do not come equipped with a kitchenette of any kind, there is typically a "floor kitchen". This universal kitchen space is usually found on every floor of a dormitory and generally includes a stove, sink, and perhaps a large refrigerator. It is not typical for pots, pans, or other related cooking supplies to be found in this common kitchen area so a student must bring their own if the space is to be used.

Baker's racks allow the student to bring along the necessary cooking utensils so that they can cook their own meals if desired. Other potential uses for quality-made bakers racks include storing extra reference materials, school supplies, or just about anything that does not have a spot in the tight and cramped confines of the typical college dorm room. The best part about bringing quality-made bakers racks along for the college experience is that they can easily be transferred to a small apartment or home once studies are over and thus continue to be useful for years and years to come.

Glass Coffee Tables Online - Why Not!!

One of the biggest and most exciting adventures is moving out on your own but it is a time when the number of choices and decisions may seem overwhelming. Now, this "moving out on your own" does not include heading off to college to live in some dingy, cramped dorm room. Your first place is that home or apartment that follows school and is therefore the true cornerstone of your adult existence. Buying the right furniture for you décor is one of those decisions that must be made that will make a bold statement as to your character. A stunning glass coffee table may not be the first piece of furniture in your new home or even the most urgent interior decorating need—but, it is vital to the living room and will certainly make a bold statement about your level of sophistication and taste.

In all honesty, a premium glass coffee table is a furnishing you either buy later in life or at the beginning of your journey into adulthood. Once (or if) children enter into the picture, there are certain safety concerns that must be considered. Plus, despite the fact that we all love our children, the potential for damage to the top of the table is very high which is why many people store away their glass coffee tables once children enter into the picture. However, once the children have grown or at least reached ages where they can be careful around valuable furniture, you may wish to bring the premium glass coffee table back out of storage so it may be displayed properly.

However, in between the time when children enter into the picture and that seemingly brief window of care-free adulthood, there is the possibility to prominently display your premium glass coffee table with the other fine furniture in your new home or apartment. The truly great fact about these types of tables is that they can truly be at home in any interior design scheme, be it modern or traditional.

In more rustic or naturalistic settings, glass coffee tables would most likely feature a base made from a fine hardwood such as oak, cherry, or even mahogany. The traditional glass coffee table may feature inlayed glass partitions set into the wooden base. On more contemporary glass coffee tables, the base will tend to be metallic and generally coated in nickel, brass, or perhaps be solid wrought iron. So long as you take the time to understand and design a comprehensive interior design scheme for you décor, you will have no problem complementing your other furnishings and giving the entire space a more unified and "sophisticated" look—befitting of your new status as a fully independent adult.

Decorating your Workplace with Tropical Office Furniture

If you love the tang of salt in the air, the soft whisper of nearby waves, and the crunch of sand between your toes, what better way could there be to create a workspace that you truly enjoy using than by decorating with tropical office furniture. Tropical surroundings inspire creativity and create a relaxed and productive atmosphere for your home office or place of business. Innovative pieces of office furniture "tropical" - such as lovely computer armoires and printer cabinets - give your workplace an elegant look with the practical benefit of helping you to keep organized. Here is a guide to choosing Hawaiian computer armoires, Bali file cabinets, and other types of office furniture, tropical style.

Materials Used in Office Furniture - Tropical Vegetation and Construction Techniques

Three terms used to describe materials that are commonly found in office furniture "tropical" style are wicker, rattan, and bamboo. Wicker actually refers to a kind of furniture building technique where strands of grasses or vines are woven together. This technique creates durable and lightweight computer armoires and other office furniture that is also environmentally friendly. Rattan is a tropical tree that grows around other trees in a jungle. Bamboo, on the other hand, is a kind of thick-skinned grass with a hollow center.

Both rattan and bamboo can be used for the structural elements of office furniture "tropical" style, whereas rattan is generally used for wicker style construction. Wicker is commonly used as decoration on the sides of tropical style computer armoires, the sides of writing desks, or the padded backs of chairs.

Selecting High Quality Office Furniture, Tropical Style

When selecting tropical computer armoires and other office furniture, tropical realities are very important. The hollow nature of bamboo means that high-quality bamboo furniture is usually wrapped to prevent splitting over time. Rattan also tends to be more flexible and durable, meaning that it is more commonly used in today's office furniture. Tropical rattan may have knobby joints, and is often wrapped for a smooth appearance.

The thickness of the individual strands of rattan will influence both the price and quality of your office furniture. Tropical rattan has an ideal diameter of about one and a half inches. High-quality rattan computer armoires and other office furniture should have a smooth and even finish, free of blotches and spotting. The most secure method of securing rattan used in tropical office furniture is glue, followed by screws. Staples and nails tend to come loose over time.

By understanding the materials used in computer armoires and other office furniture, tropical style, you should be well equipped to add the flair of the islands to your own workplace.

Discount Furniture To Make Your Home Unique

Furnishing and decorating your home can be a daunting and expensive task to undertake. It is not necessary, though, to spend thousands of dollars on high end furnishings and décor in order to make your home a unique showplace that represents who your are. All it takes is a little ingenuity, some detective skills, a good dose of creativity and thought, and a bit of money, and you can have fun finding furniture for your home. By seeking out different types of discount furniture, you will be recycling old pieces that are potential treasures, as well as keeping money in your wallet.

The first thing you need to do when you want to furnish and decorate your home is to figure out what you like. Do you like contemporary styles, pieces that are more modern with clean lines and no fussy fabrics? Or do you prefer a country or cottage style, with plush fabrics in woodsy or floral patterns? Or maybe you like the rustic look, with dark woods and leathers that will give your home a warm log cabin feel. Whatever your style is, you should scour magazines and the Internet to find just the type of pieces you are looking for, so that you have a basis to start from.

The next step is to find the discount furniture that is right for your home. You can try websites that sell reduced-priced home furnishings. Be careful, because you might find that the money you save in the cost of a sofa might be made up in the cost to ship it to you. You can also look out for sales at local furniture stores. Sometimes furniture stores are liquidating certain furniture collection to make room for newer ones. In addition, some furniture stores might have "scratch and dent" items. These items are sold as is and at a deep discount, and often the flaws are very minor. There are also furniture warehouses that specialize in scratch and dent merchandise, and the variety of discount furniture available at those types of stores is quite impressive.

Another great place to look for discount furniture is at consignments shops. If you can find a local consignment shop that sells furniture, you are likely to uncover some hidden treasures that might only require a few repairs. And the prices are sure to be reasonable, perhaps even negotiable. And if do it yourself work is your thing, there are abundant places to find old, used, and slightly damaged furniture sold at discounts. For example, searching flea markets and garage or estate sales might lead you to uncover collectibles, antiques, and rare furniture and décor items that can be restored for not a lot of money. These pieces will add a unique touch to your home. In addition, putting your own individual touch on the furnishing your restore or repair will give you a real sense of pride and accomplishment.

In addition to looking at flea markets, garage sales, and consignment shops for discount furniture, you can also find great décor pieces that can be added to your home to achieve a certain them or style. Paintings, pictures, gilded mirrors, vases, or any other type of knick-knack can be the finishing touches that you need to beautifully furnish your home.

You do not have to pay a fortune to furnish your home. By taking the time to seek out discount furniture, you can uncover some distinctive treasures, and even find new items at reduced prices. Taking the time to locate discount furniture will be easier on your wallet, and will help you make your home as individual as you are.

Buying Displayed Furniture

Have you ever just had to have a certain piece of furniture right then – you won't leave the store without it? If you have ever had such an experience, you have probably been offered the displayed floor model. If you have not had a similar experience, be aware of these issues that might arise when buying a demo, displayed piece of furniture.

Most stores can order furniture for you unless the particular model you want is being discontinued. Or, unless you absolutely, positively plan to walk out of the store with the sofa, recliner, or other piece of furniture that very day.

If you find yourself in either of the above situations, you should be aware of the pros and cons of buying a demo or displayed piece of furniture.

The biggest pro, obviously, is being able to have the instant gratification of immediate ownership. If really, really want a piece of furniture that is on display, try to hold your enthusiasm for the piece until you can talk with the sales person. Ask if there is a discount for buying the floor model. That would be a second pro. If a commissioned sales person can see how desperate you are to own that piece of furniture, he or she might be more likely to hold you to the original price. The best way to proceed is to ask the sales person what kind of price he can give you for that piece. Then, ask what price he can give you on the floor model. With any luck, the prices will show a decrease each time you ask!

If there is no discount for buying the floor model, proceed with caution. Don't let your urge for immediate ownership of the furniture to keep you from getting the best deal. Back away and think about it. Can you wait another two weeks for a brand new piece of furniture to be shipped to your house? If the answer is no, go back and look at the furniture. Prepare to give it a good inspection.

If it is a sofa or chair, chances are that many of people have tried it out by sitting in it. Look at the seat. Is it worn or showing any signs of wear? Check out the back. Sometimes the natural oils from hair or the back side of necks can rub off on furniture cushions. Look for oily spots on the cushions.

Take a look at the arms. Are they worn? Pay special attention to the cording on the arms and cushions. As people get up or lean back to get comfortable, the cording gets extra friction against it and shows signs of wearing sooner.

Next, check the seams. Are any of the seams pulling apart? This might happen if a number of people have tried out the furniture. As people sit on the cushions, the seams tend to pull. They generally go back in place when the person gets up, but continued use could cause seams to separate permanently.

If you spot any signs of wear, point them out to the sales person. If he still won't come down off the price, walk on by. Place your order and wait for a perfect model to arrive just for you!

Choosing Furniture For Your New Home

Moving into your first home, or climbing up the property ladder is always exciting. One of the best parts of having more space is deciding on how you're going to use each room in the house, and what furniture you need to buy.

In today's world of home décor magazines, TV shows and internet marketing, home owners are faced with an overwhelming choice. Whether you're just buying a table or you need to furnish your whole house, it can be difficult to know where to start.

There are several things you need to consider before you commit to buying. Furniture is expensive and needs to last a reasonable amount of time, so make sure you choose what's right for you ad your lifestyle. The things you need to think about might include:

Cost – buying a house is expensive, so you may only have a limited budget left for furniture.

Use – will you be using this furniture often, or is it mostly for display purposes? Will you be opening and shutting the doors every day, or using the table for every meal?

Children and pets – will you mind if your furniture gets damaged, or will you be able to protect it if you need to?

Size – will you be able to get the furniture through your door, and will it look right in your room? Pieces that look great in large showrooms are often too big for much smaller rooms.

Durability – do you want this piece of furniture to last for ever? How susceptible is the wood to chips, scratches or marks?

Care – will your furniture require a lot of attention to keep it looking good?

Take all these considerations into account before you decide what type of furniture you want in your house. Once you are happy with your decisions, make the time to look around – on the internet, in showrooms and in magazines - to find the furniture that's right for you.

Home Improvement

It is possible to make your home or apartment look good without spending a truckload of money on furniture and other items. As long as you follow a few simple rules and take advantage of new opportunities for frugal shopping (such as the Internet) you can transform any space into a relaxing, comfortable retreat.

1. Harness the transformative power of paint. Using paint to transform a room is one of the cheapest ways to make a big impact. Adding color, and maybe even paint designs, to the walls of a room is the easiest and most effective way to decorate a room and permeate it with your own personal style. You can also paint furniture to cover up aging pieces or antique finds that require some TLC. And if you make a mistake or decide to switch up your design in a few years, paint is very easy to change.

2. Plush pillows. Another wallet-friendly way to give your home that designer feel is to add accent pillows and rugs to the mix. Because these items tend to be small and sold for very little, you don't have to spend a lot of money to incorporate them into a space. A plush pillow alone can really work wonders, drawing your eye away from less appealing elements and toward a splash of color and texture. For extra effect, combine pillow sizes and shapes, or consider purchasing oversized floor cushions for even more color and added seating. Throw rugs constructed out of remnants are also a cheap way to add interest to an otherwise dull place.

3. Let there be light. Place several lamps around the room for an inexpensive way to create a space filled with warmth and comfort. If you opt for three way lighting, each lamp can serve a dual purpose: a brighter setting will provide working light when you need it, and a lower setting will create an intimate ambiance when you want to make the room feel even more cozy.

If you don't have enough money to buy new lamps, simply hide ugly lighting fixtures behind the sofa or a plant to keep it out of sight, and create a dramatic lighting effect at the same time.

Installing colored bulbs is another clever way to use lighting as an inexpensive decorating method. Colored lighting washes a room with soft light that produces an inviting atmosphere. This technique is most effective in the bedroom and bathroom.

4. Accessorize. You can easily reinvent a space anytime you want by incorporating new accessories. Buy new towels, a shower curtain, and other accessories if you want to revamp your bathroom. In other rooms, add a flower vase, or display a couple of cool knick-knacks you've picked up through the years.

An eclectic array of accoutrements works really well – you can usually find unique pieces at garage sales and on eBay for very low prices.

Candles are also a favorite. They instantly make a room feel cozy and warm without costing a bundle. They put that finishing touch on a room and make it feel complete. The fragrance alone will do wonders.

Decorative molding and medallions may seem too expensive a touch, but they are truly an affordable alternative to wood moldings. You can quickly and easily install them, and maintenance is a breeze.

Hanging framed photos of loved ones is another trick used by designers the world over. They add a simple focal point to a room and don't cost a lot to create.

5. Window coverings. A bit of money put into curtains or window coverings can do more for a room than you might expect. The beauty of fabric adds drama and luxury to bare windows and makes the entire room stand out. Even if you rent and have vertical blinds to contend with, the softness of a curtain creates a more elegant, finished look. If you know how to sew, purchase fabric from an outlet and make the curtains yourself. If you aren't an expert with pins and needles, consider buying basic store-bought curtain panels with a patterned fabric.

6. Use your own furniture. Instead of buying new, expensive furniture, use what you already have. If the pieces are in decent condition, give them a good cleaning, slap of paint, or a slipcover. Slipcovers are easy to find in home stores these days, and are sold at affordable prices. On top of all that, they are durable and washable.

If you have nothing to start with, become an online shop-a-holic. Scour online furniture stores for quality pieces at low prices. Often, online stores sell for less than retail because their business has less overhead to deal with – as a result, the savings are passed on to the consumer. And shipping prices have come down across the board, so there's no excuse not to order furniture online.

If you follow these frugal factoids and aren't afraid to shop in a few unconventional places for furniture and other items, you'll be able to furnish your entire home on a tiny budget. It'll be worth every penny.

Choosing Your Dining Room Table

When you are shopping for a dining room table to fit with your preexisting furniture, there are some important things you should look for and keep in mind. These tips are great for narrowing down your selection and helping you decide on things such as design, colors, practical or not practical, and much more. Maybe you are looking for a formal table to go in your formal dining room. Perhaps you want a regular table that will fit by the window in the kitchen. A table can be used for so many things, and you will want to consider all that there is to consider about your table before you take the plunge and purchase the first one that you see. Wether you are buying all new furniture, or just wanting to give your dining room a face lift with a new table, these tips will help keep you on track.

While you are shopping for dining room tables, having a specific design in mind, that you are looking for will help you out a lot. This will help narrow down your search for that perfect table to set off your room and make it more comfortable. Keeping in mind the design feel you are planning for the room, wether it is modern, contemporary, antique or anything else. Try to stay away from designs you are wanting to avoid.

You will find that dining room tables come in all colors of wood finishes. These colors range from pecan, oak, cherry and many more. Knowing the color of the wood finish you want before you begin your search is a good step in the right direction. If you have other wood pieces in the room, try sticking with the same color for the best overall effect. Maybe you want to choose the wood table and then the other pieces of furniture for the room. You can do that as well. You will have a nice base piece, and can incorporate other pieces into the room as you come across ones that you love. Maybe a matching china cabinet, or buffet for the empty wall under the window.

Do you know what size table you need? Because dining room tables come in so many sizes, from small to large, you really should take measurements of your space before shopping and know what size of table your room can accommodate. Besides, if you fell in love with a table that is too large, it might break your heart having to return it to the store because you do not have enough room. Jot down your measurements, and be sure you take them with you when you shop.

Are you wanting a table that is practical or a “wow” factor in the room? Because dining room tables are so versatile, you will find while shopping there are many of both kinds. From the conversational piece, to the plain Jane table that is mostly for use. Knowing the extreme you want your table beforehand is an excellent idea, and will keep you from looking at the “wow” tables, when you want practical instead.

Think about the uses you will get out of your new table. Because dining room tables can be used for more than just eating on, you may be thinking about a table that can come in handy for a poker game or board games with the family. Thinking about these things before you go shopping will help you when you are looking around for what you want. You will also go in knowing what you want in advance.

Glass top dining room tables can come in several designs and suit many needs. Decide ahead of time if a glass top table is something you find appealing. If not, you will know to avoid looking at those, and stick with the wood tops.

Because dining room tables are so versatile, and come in so many design ranges, unfortunately, so does the price. know how much money you want to spend on your table before you go shopping. This way you can stay in your price range, and choose accordingly. If you set your budget ahead of time, and you stick with it, you will feel good knowing you did.

If you prefer wood over metal, or metal over wood, then shopping for the appropriate style of table won’t be so hard. Because dining room tables come in both, you are given a nice variety to choose from. If most of your pieces in the room are metal, stick with metal and go with the theme. Besides, you don’t want your new table to stick out like a sore thumb.

If you have small children and or pets, this could effect which dining room tables you have to choose from. With small children and pets in your home, avoid tables that have sharp corners and that can be broken or scratched easily. You want your children and pets to feel comfortable in your home, so taking these things into consideration before hand might save you from worrying about them injuring themselves later.

Dining room tables are great pieces of furniture. They are versatile, affordable, gorgeous, practical and numerous. Deciding which one to buy is just as much fun as it is shopping for one. When you go shopping knowing what you are looking for ahead of time, it makes finding the perfect one so much easier. Taking all of the above points into consideration before you begin your hunt, will help you narrow down your selection and make a good choice for your dining room.
