Window Blinds

Popular Blinds

Changing the look of your home really is not that difficult and does not require any more effort than installing window blinds. This might not seem like a very big deal to you, but once you have window blinds installed you will realize the huge difference it makes in the feel of your home. This is because window blinds add a softness to your windows and you can control the amount of light that come in your home and the amount of privacy you need and want. Blinds really do have a lot of uses and come in a variety of styles and colors. Some of the most popular types of window blinds include Roman blinds, Venetian blinds, mini blinds, vertical blinds, and woven wood blinds.

There are a large selection of blinds that include Venetian blinds, mini blinds, Roman blinds, woven wood blinds, and vertical blinds. Each of these types of blinds offers a special function or design that will enhance your home's décor.

Venetian blinds are the typical horizontal blinds that can be raised or lowered depending on your need for light or privacy. They come in a variety of colors, sizes, and fabrics depending on your budget and needs.

Mini blinds are simply miniature Venetian blinds that can be installed in the window frame to create a different look. These can be purchased in the same price ranges as Venetian blinds as well as the variety of colors.

Vertical blinds are frequently made of a fabric composite, or even plastic or wood, and hang vertically. Because of this, vertical blinds are generally used to screen patio doors and larger window areas.

The woven wood blinds are natural looking as well because they are made from wood, weed, and grass fibers. As a result, they are great for homes that use a lot of wood and natural fibers as well in the décor.

Another option is to have your window blinds custom made in the exact fabric and style you desire as well dyed to match color if you desire. Having your blinds custom made does cost more money, so you might consider asking for a quote before choosing this option.

If your home needs a little updating, or some softness, then do some research on the types of blinds that are available in your budget. Then, decide on the colors and styles that will best reflect the unique design of your home. Once you pick out this, you will be able to buy your blinds.

Installing blinds in your home will really make a difference that is visible and that you will really enjoy. The best thing to do is go online or to your local home store and find out what blinds are available in your budget and the ones that would look best in your home.

Go ahead and start shopping for blinds that will update the look of your home without changing it. You can do this bit of decorating for a small budget and will see major results in the look and feel of your home.

Chill Out With A Quality Ceiling Fan

Are you craving some air flow in your house? Is the air conditioner running as hard as it can go but it still feels stuffy and hot in your house? Try installing a ceiling fan and see if it will give you some relief. Ceiling fans create air flow in a highly decorative way. They are many different varieties of ceiling fans these days. The choices can be overwhelming. How do you decide what kind of fan and what size you need?

You first need to measure the room where the ceiling fans home will be. Your room size dictates the fan blade size. The small the room, the smaller the blade you will need on the fan. The larger the room, the larger the fan blade you need. For optimum airflow, ceiling fans should be hung no higher than seven to eight feet from the floor. This measurement will dictate the kind of mount you will need to purchase for your fan. The blade pitch dictates how efficiently the fan blades move air. The steeper the pitch the more air the blades will move in your room.

Are you purchasing a fan primarily for air flow or is it going to be the focal point of your room as well? If you are just going for air flow you can choose any fan that blends with your room.

If you want the fan to blend with the room, you probably want to choose one of the ceiling fans that will blend in with your ceiling to avoid taking focus from your room. If you want a great focal point for your room, you are going to be excited when you go to the home improvement store and see the wonderful selection of ceiling fans that are available.

There are ceiling fans for every mood you want to create. They make ceiling fans that look like bamboo fans, shells and many, many other styles. The motor housing's are available in many different materials as well. They are available in brushed steel, white, brass, bronze, copper, wood grain and other finishes. The blades come in many different shapes, as well as materials such as a metal finish, faux wood, bamboo, fabrics and many paint colors.

If you live in location where you see three or four seasons a reversible fan may be right for you. In the summer your ceiling fans can be set to draw the warm air up away from you while in the winter you can reverse the fan blade direction to push the warm air that collects near the ceiling down to where you are.

Did you know that you can save money on your electric bill by using ceiling fans? It is an inexpensive way to save you approximately 10-15% on your electric bill each year. Ceiling fans range in price from around $100 to over $1000 depending upon the finish and style. Ceiling fans can be usually installed in just a few hours using the easy to follow instructions included with the fan or you can pay someone to install it for you. So give it a try and install ceiling fans all through your house!

The Importance Of Bedroom Design In A Home Decoration Project

A home is a place where we live, spend most of our lives, with family members and our loved ones.

A bedroom design project includes a careful study of the surrounding of the entire home. When an architect plans a home, he takes into consideration many parameters for the location of various spaces.

Lets take an example of the bedroom itself.

While deciding the location of the bedroom, an architect might go through the following checklist.

North direction
Path of the sun.
Surrounding landscapes.
Presence of other natural elements such as lake, flowing river, seashore, etc.. which could be visible through bedroom window.
Wind direction.
Manmade other features, such as tall buildings, roads, etc..

These external factors directly affect the interior of a bedroom. This is true with any space and not only bedroom.

For example the amount of sunlight entering in a room will affect the dimensions of the window openings, which will in turn affect the available space inside the room for furniture.

The overall atmospheric conditions outside, will affect the type of finishes and materials used for furnishings, linen, flooring, etc.. A bedroom on seashore will have a different set of weather conditions to deal with than a room on a hill slope with heavy snowfall.

That's why the interior design of any living habitual space is an exact replica of what's happening outside. Everything is so dynamic. A slight change in the outside world can affect the appearance of the home altogether.

If you are trying to design your own space then this article might help to start thinking on the concept level.

With these words I end this article and hope it was useful.

Protective Coatings For Your Home

There are several areas of your home that suffer from extensive damage, whether it is due to poor weather, physical damage or simply because of old age. Protective coatings are a great way to help these areas remain durable and resistant against negative elements. One of the most delicate surfaces around your home is the driveway and garage floor. You can use some tough protective coatings to protect such spaces - simply brush or roll the coating in an easy but effective action that will protect your driveway from all sorts of damage. For concrete floors, choose a high quality epoxy coating - this is an excellent addition to the floor's structure because it soaks in and becomes part of the concrete matrix. High chemical and fuel resistance also recommends such coatings for garages and workshops. Most top grade protective coatings are engineered to self level and have different characteristics such as being resistant to chemicals, spilled fuel, brake fluid and acids, is impact resistant to 500 PSI, heat resistant to 350 + degrees, color-fast, non-chalking and resists cracking, chipping and peeling.

Due to recent advancements, several top class products appeared on the protective coatings market. Choosing a silicone based epoxy ester single component epoxy product, for example, will guarantee excellent resistance and unsurpassed flexibility, two very desirable elements of any coating system. Such products are reinforced with alkyd and urethane, two special components that augment the qualities of the protective coating. The interesting thing about such a waterproof floor coating is that it is the same product used on aircraft carriers. This means that, originally, it was designed to withstand extreme damage, such as jet fighter landings and take offs, fuel leaks, flaming jet exhausts and so on. Imagine how resistant such a protective coating would be on your driveway!

Epoxy coatings are also used in protecting other materials, such as wood, concrete, metal, fiberglass... and the list goes on. Not only do they do their job with military precision, these epoxy coatings are also lead-free, making them safe for the environment. When they dry, the protective coatings are completely harmless and non-toxic, so you don't have to worry about your pets or children. You can top the coating with a clear finish, especially if you purchase one with UV inhibitors that guarantee a long life. Such a finish would make the protected surface look even better than it originally did, plus with the extra protection it brings. When properly applied, such protective coatings do not chip or break and most good manufacturers and retailers offer guarantees that extend up to 5 years.

Vintage Lighting: Action Lamps, Stained Glass Lighting and Lava Lamps are here to Stay!

Since the early part of the 20th century lighting designers have created lamps and fixtures to captivate our senses. Much like the tranquility one feels staring at a warming fire or the excitement one feels staring at the spectacle of a lightening storm, accent lamps – those with colorful stained glass patterns, mythical figures, pastoral scenes or action, evoke our emotions.

While illumination is a function of lighting, many of the lamps of the sensory ilk, including lava lamps of the 50's and 60's, and animated action lamps of the 20's and again in the 1950's, favor more the sense of accent, entertainment and decoration than the practical function of task lighting.

Static yet colorful stained glass lighting appeals as eye candy. Beautiful patterns of Wisteria, Iris, and nature captivate, whether lit or not. Not much has changed since pioneer Louis Comfort Tiffany introduced his first stained glass art lamps more than 100 years ago. Vintage original Tiffany fixtures can be bought for more than the cost of a down payment for a San Francisco home.

Motion lamps, like the animated lamps of the 1920's, feature popular scenes such as water cascading over Niagra Falls or flames burning around a log. It's no wonder why advertisers sought to reintroduce action lamps again in the 1950's. In the 50's these moving lamps were brought back to life featuring Cole Swimwear models or popular snacks and drinks such as popcorn or coke and would rest upon the counter of a bar for all to enjoy!

Lava lamps also captured our fascination with colorful lighting and movement. Today, these, and the above mentioned vintage lamps, continue to be popular. Collectors may seek higher valued originals, whereas the homeowner may be just as happy with a modern day reproduction. Adding to the feel of a place, these kinds of fixtures are here to stay!

Dressing Up Shower Curtain Rods

If you are on a tight decorating budget, or just like getting really creative, then you may want to consider using shower curtain rods in more places than the bathroom. Sure these rods are functional. They do hold up the all important shower curtain liner that keeps water in the shower and off the bathroom floor. But shower curtain rods also make great decorative poles in other room of the house.

Some of the Most Unusual Place to Hang a Rod

Shower curtain rods can be purchased for just a few dollars but look like a million bucks when used in some creative places around the house. It's the kind of home improvement project a struggling college student can use or the most sophisticated decorator and still have a great new look.

In the bedroom: Drapery fabric or curtains are a great way to hide an unattractive wall or cover closets where doors just don't work. The pressure style rods simply twist to the right size and are held in place by pressure. One consideration with this type of rod is that it cannot usually support very heavy drapes. If you are using velvet for example, you would probably need a rod that is mounted with good drywall screws.

Another creative place to use shower curtain rods in the bedroom is by suspending a couple from the ceiling above the bed. Sheer fabric can drape across both rods with a dip in the centre and then the fabric can cascade down the wall at the head of the bed. Not only have you created a romantic canopy, but you will also have a soft fabric headboard as a backdrop to decorative pillows.

In the Kitchen: A pantry area can be curtained off by using a shower curtain rod and some lightweight kitchen print fabric. This can be coordinated with café curtains on the windows and all of the table linens.

In the Sunroom: What to do with a sunroom that gets too hot? Most sunrooms are vented to control temperature, but it can still heat up the connecting rooms in the house when too much sun comes in. You can use a pressure shower curtain rod at either end of the overhead windows in a sunroom. Then stitch a pocket ½" wider than the pole's diameter into which the poles slip. When you hang the rods the fabric can be taut or drape slightly. Either way you have diffused the sunlight just enough to control the room's temperature.

Shower Curtain Rods for the Bathroom

The latest decorating trends have taken the mundane out of bathrooms. There are s-shaped rods that make an old fashioned claw foot tub able to support a shower spray. Also, there are new designs in rods that suspend them from chains so that they appear to float from the ceiling. You can dress up shower curtain rods by choosing fun coordinating colours or attaching the curtains with interesting ribbons or clips. It doesn't have to be just a plastic ring through a button hole.

The ideas are endless and only limited by imagination and creativity. Spend some time looking through decorating catalogues and you will see that whenever there is an expensive rod used to hold up fabric, a shower curtain rod may do the job just as well, but for a whole lot less money.

Victorian Decorating In 6 Easy Steps!

Victorian decorating is considered one of the most intricate of all the different interior decorating styles that you can choose from. The reason for this is because the colors, fabrics, furniture and decorations are all elaborate and full.

Victorian decorating is based on the period during the 19th century in jolly old England. So, the more authentic you want your Victorian room to be, you can expect that the furnishings and other decorative items can be quite expensive.

You will need to be very creative and crafty if you wish to make the most of this theme. But, it's possible to makeover a room with a Victorian style, even if you are on a tight budget.

Following is an example of how you can use Victorian decorating to transform the look of your living room:

Step 1 - So that you know the size of the area you have to work with, the first thing you should do before beginning your Victorian decorating is to measure the space of the room.

Step 2 - Use colors such as deep green, red, dark pink, mauve, burgundy, and purple for walls, rugs, upholstery and other accessory colors. These were the most popular colors of the Victorian period.

It's also a great idea to add crown molding and wallpaper borders around the top of walls. And don't be afraid to use more than one color when decorating the room.

Step 3 - You can choose rich wooden furnishings such as sofas and chairs when selecting furniture for Victorian decorating. The legs, backs and arms of these furnishings are carved to stand out, while the upholstery is usually velvet, embroidered fabrics, and brocade.

Accompanying these pieces are pillows that are created with similar fabrics, and trimmed with lace, frills, beading, ribbons or bows. The other furnishings in the room for Victorian decorating are various marbletop tables or they could be made of wood such as bamboo.

Step 4 - Decorations that are placed on the tables, such as candleholders, crystal lamps, porcelain figurines, or a vase of dried flowers, should be set on embroidered doilies to add affect.

All paintings are usually in gold or wooden frames. Other exciting Victorian pieces that can be added to the living room are a grandfather clock, porcelain dolls and decorative plates.

Other Victorian decorating accessories that you can add to the room to give it authenticity include paintings of young maidens, children, a portrait of your family, or perhaps of your ancestors.

Step 5 - When Victorian decorating windows, you need to make them elaborate with draperies, swags and braided tiebacks. Popular fabrics for the window are also brocades and velvet.

Step 6 - The floors of the living room can either be hardwood floors or wall-to-wall carpeting. But, no matter which flooring type you choose, it is a good idea to add an area rug that is fashioned in an oriental style to complete the authenticity of the Victorian decorating look.

As you can see, Victorian decorating is very involved and comes with a heavy feel to it. That being the case, make sure you pick a room that can handle this décor. That way, you can enjoy it to its fullest.

Modern Decor Tip: Blend Not Match

Are you having a difficult time trying to match the colors of the different pieces in your room's color scheme? Do you want to know how good Interior Designers solve this tough problem? I'll let you in on the secret...they blend the colors in the room instead of matching the colors. Don't be afraid because you can do it too. In fact, I really recommend it because it will allow you the freedom of being able to easily incorporate more exciting pieces into the room's color scheme and it will also make your life easier too since you won't end up going crazy trying to make all of your room's decor match perfectly!

How do you determine what items blend in your room and what items don't? A real good rule of thumb is to stand back and look at all the pieces in question together and to go with your gut feeling or (if you don't quite trust your eye for color) seek out a second opinion from a good friend or family member with a good eye for color. This method of blending not matching is especially helpful when you're working with a pattern that may take on one general color when viewed from a distance. I also like to take a close look at each patterned piece to see which colors they're comprised of to see if the piece is a fit. Be sure to have fun and remember; blend not match!

You can find more fun and exciting design and decorating tips on our website which features art and decor tips for contemporary homes and also art and home decor shopping.

The Truth About Interior Design

Have you ever wondered how you can make your home look like the place of the affluent people? Or would you just like to create an impression of classic beauty with an air of sophistication?

All of these things can be made through the use of interior designs.

Basically, interior design refers to the art of manipulating and forming the inner space of a house, an office, or a room, through the management of surface healing and "spatial volume."

Interior designs are generally used to bring in the features of architecture, furniture designs, environmental psychology, and product design. All of these are combined to create an artistic projection of the area in project.

The Style

The interior designer should know and take into consideration the different parts of "design styles." These are the proportion, function of design, concept, and balance. All of these parts are important in creating the total "look and feel" of the room.

For instance, in creating the "look and feel" of the room, the interior design could enhance the "graphical user interface" of the design buy using the right combination of colors, layout, shapes, etc.

Included in the aspect of styles are the seven elements of design that an interior designer must always take into account. These are the shape, form, line, texture, color, pattern, and mass. All of these things, when incorporated in a project will bring out the best results.

However, good interior designers must also take into account the aspects of beauty in terms of its function and aesthetics. A good balance between the two will instigate proper coordination of all the elements of design.

The reason behind this argument is based on the fact that the concept of beauty is always comparative and qualified. As the old adage goes, "Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder."

Hence, there are instances that one design might be beautiful for one person but may look unsightly with others. That is why when the function of interior design serves its purpose as far as enhancing the total outlook of the space is considered as universal, the comparativeness of its beauty will vary from one person to another.

For this reason, the design used by the interior designer may be relative to his or her own aspect of beauty but may be taken differently by his or her viewers. Nevertheless, it is still the interior designer who will know the appropriate use of the different elements of design associated with the utilization of the various kinds of materials that he or she will use.

Consequently, the interior designer must still consider the insights and taste of the user or the customer. After all, the interior designer is being paid to enhance the space according to the taste of the one who will use that space.

At this point, it is now based on the "sales talks" or the persuasive power of the designer to convince his or her client the best style, patterned to his or her style. In this way, the designer will not be in trouble of deviating from the interests of the client. Otherwise, the designer may no longer find future works from this particular client.

Indeed, interior designing is not just a matter of good taste and spatial enhancement. It is also a conglomeration of the application of the different elements of design along with the personal interest of the client.

It is a work of art with the value of ethical standards constituted in one art form.

Easy Kids Rooms Decorating Ideas

When trying to come up with decorating themes for kids rooms, think like a child.

Don't just limit your choices to the prepackaged ideas that you find in catalogs. You can create a decorating theme on your own that is better than one you can buy. And you can definitely create your own theme more affordably.

There are lots of resources around you that you can use for inspiration in decorating kids rooms. See if any of these get your kids rooms decorating juices flowing:

1) Your child's books. Regardless of your child's age, the books he or she enjoys reading or having read to them is a good indicator of what appeals to them. If your child is in school then you should take a longer look at the books that they read by choice than those they read by assignment.

2) Your kids's favorite outfit. Whether it's a cute little pink dress with ruffles or a camouflage t-shirt and faded jeans, a child's most treasured outfit is a good measure of his or her tastes.

3) Your child's favorite music. It could be a classical guitarists' soft notes or the raging amplified strings of an acoustic guitar that make your child's feet move, but your child's music is also a valid indicator of his or her preferences.

All these resources for decorating kids room have one common element...your child. At a very early age, children begin developing their own likes and dislikes. If you question this theory, try feeding a toddler for a few days. Even if it has been some time since you've done that you will soon remember that even toddlers know immediately whether they prefer peaches or green beans.

Whether considering themes for kids rooms, building a sandcastle or pleading their cases for a later bedtime, children don't impose the same limitations on their ideas that we do as adults. If an idea is practical from a child's point of view then the child finds a way to make it work.

For example, ottomans become stagecoaches, braided rugs become magic carpets, and the floor becomes a circus arena or an ice-skating rink.

For original ideas for kids rooms that you can actually use, watch a group of children playing. You'll see the fruits of unlimited imagination. When a concept enters a child's mind, the child takes that concept in hand and the concept is materialized.

All sorts of kids rooms possibilities exist in things you already own. Try looking at things you have packed away through the eyes of a child. Children see things for all they can be instead of limiting them to a singular purpose. What about that awful velvet painting? It has a perfect frame for your child's favorite poster...just imagine it!

Bonsai Tree Care

Bonsai was first discovered over one thousand years ago in China although it was not known as "bonsai" back then, instead it was known as "punsai".

As the world progressed and Japan started to adopt many of China's cultures, bonsai was introduced to the Japanese, bonsai then spread through all of Asia.

Growing bonsai trees has become a very popular activity all around the world, it is a little different from other plants and trees that tend to appear everywhere and that is what makes them such fun.

Bonsai quickly spread throughout the world when it was discovered and became popular with many different cultures but the thing that was most interesting about bonsai was not how to grow it but instead how to care for it and form it.

Bonsai trees can be formed into different shapes, different looks, different feels and it can be "manipulated" to create the effect that the grower wants, however, this is something that most people do not know how to do.

Bonsai tree care is something that you need to learn in order to grow your own beautiful trees, it is easy to do when you have the right knowledge.

One of the most important aspects of growing and caring for bonsai is that you know what outcome you would like before you even start, this will save you time and effort.

Bonsai tree care does not have to be something that is a chore or something that you have to "waste" time learning, it can be a fun and enjoyable experience, even if you fail.

When bonsai was discovered by the rest of the world, it quickly became a very popular subject with exhibitions appearing all over the world, the demand for bonsai trees became extremely high and it started a frenzy of people urgently trying to grow the trees.

The one thing that people wanted to desperately know was how to form the shapes and looks that bonsai experts did, now it is possible.

Indoor Ponds Keep Plants and Fish Healthy During Winter Months

If you've never seen an indoor fish pond or are of the mind that the only place for a fishpond is outdoors, it's time to readjust your thinking. Many people love the idea of having a goldfish or Koi pond in their lawn and garden area but find the reality isn't always as wonderful as the fantasy.

Every winter runs the risk of losing the plant and fish life in your pond with the first freeze. As a result, more and more people are coming up with a method for bringing the outdoors, in and forming your very own pond indoors is a beautiful alternative to a tired old aquarium. While an indoor pond doesn't have to be beautiful in order to be functional, you can choose to make it a focal point and conversation piece quite easily.

A fairly simple and inexpensive way to craft an indoor pond this winter season is by using interlocking landscaping blocks to form a basic outline, and place a pre molded plastic pond liner (to avoid leaks), and other landscaping items such as rocks, plants, and soil in order to fill in the gaps. Others have even used a plastic kiddie pool for the fish and disguised the pool by hiding it with bricks or landscaping rocks.

The main purpose of indoor ponds is to protect your fish and plant life from the extreme winter weather conditions. It is quite easy to move the fish and plants from one pond to another. Be sure to keep the indoor pond regulated for temperature and water freshness by using proper equipment. Taking these precautions should keep your Koi fish and your plants healthy throughout the harsher winter months.

Harvest Wreath

I took a hike with my son a few days ago. Little did I know that within a few hours time (the bulk of the time was the actual hike), we would have a gorgeous, homemade harvest wreath that truly rivaled anything I have seen in the trendy stores and catalogs. The two best things about this unintentional project were the fun we had making the wreath, and the fact that it was absolutely free!

It was a sunny, crisp October afternoon. My family enjoys hiking, so my son and I decided to indulge in one of our favorite pastimes. Living in the northeast, the colors and sights of fall were pretty much at their peak. It was a feast for the senses as well as a nice way to spend some quality time together.

We were walking around a lake in a lightly wooded area. Vibrant red leaves on the vines entwined around mature trees were truly breathtaking. The twisting and braiding around the tree trunks in such intricate and fascinating ways had an almost surreal quality to them. If you've ever seen how those climbing vines, you know what I mean!

There were similar trees and vines scattered about that were obviously dead. My little guy asked if those vines were the same ones they sell at the craft stores (the ones arranged in circles, ovals, hearts, etc). I honestly didn't know and still don't, but they did look similar. Then my son asked, "Can we make a wreath with a dead vine?"

Wow! Out of the mouths of babes, as the saying goes!! He gave me a fresh idea for an awesome home interior decorating idea for fall (thanks, Honey!): a harvest wreath. I couldn't wait to share this idea with you.

We carefully unwound one of the dead vines until we had about ten feet (this is just an estimate; we didn't have a tape measure or anything like that with us). After removing a few crunchy dead leaves, we wound the vine around itself to make a circle. It wasn't perfect by any means, and I think that added to its charm.

As we continued out hike, we collected wildflowers in bright purple, white, and yellow.

Once we were back at home, we plucked some orange mums from the back garden. Using the stems, we threaded the flowers and weeds onto our dark brown vine. We did this quite whimsically, not putting any thought into color placement or anything too complicated; if it looked good and the stem held it on the vine, we added the flower or weed.

This project literally took less than an hour from start to finish and my son did the bulk of the creation. I hung our harvest wreath on the front door, and received many compliments from my neighbors. One even asked where we bought it because she wanted one for her door, too! I could not believe how simple it was to make and yet how beautiful it came out!

It's a few days later now and the flowers have faded, but the wreath is still lovely. I have since collected small bunches of flowers, weeds, and herbs and am drying them upside down. Once dry, I will attach them to the vine with floral wire. I also intend to add nuts and seed pods with my hot glue gun. A homemade bow from old ribbon will be the finishing touch.

I hope this inspires you to make your own harvest wreath. It is a simple, lovely, and easy way to add to your autumn décor.

What To Consider Before You Start Decorating Your Home

The success of any decorating scheme depends on how well it suits all the members of your family. To create a décor that you will be happy with, think about what you want and also what you don't want. It's a good idea to know what you have before you begun to change things. As you begin to pull your design ideas together, think about your preference and what will work in your home.

Color can work wonders...it can change the look of a room and change your feeling about the room. You can start by looking through magazines, and catalogs. Give yourself plenty of time, it will take longer than you think, and your ideas will develop as you go. Gathering samples is a great way to begin. If you are starting with a color, your samples might include fabric, paint chips, wallpaper, carpet, wood, stone, and tile.

Knowing what you can spend on a project will give you a clearer idea of what you can achieve. If you'll on a limited budget, mark off those things that will make the most difference, such as a new wall color and a new sofa. You can set the mood of a room in lots of ways, such as lights, and furnishings. There are no hard or fast rules or must-do sequence for this process.

What You Should Know Before You Choose Wallpaper

Wallpaper varies greatly in its material content, which helps determine how a paper looks and how it handles. Vinyl wallpaper are popular because they are durable, fairly easy to install, and easy to maintain. There are fabric-backed vinyl, paper-backed vinyl, and ones designed to look like a three dimensional surface, such as plaster, granite, or grass cloth, which are suitable for walls that aren't perfectly smooth.

Fabric wallpaper are usually made of cotton, linen, or other natural plant fibers, such as grass cloth, hemp, or burlap. Most textiles fray easily and are not washable. Solid paper wall coverings include hand-screened papers, foils, flocked papers with textured patterns, and murals. Both textile and paper wallpapers should be installed by professionals.

To determine how much wallpaper to buy, measure the height and width of each wall using a steel tape measure. Round up to the nearest foot. Multiply the height and width of each wall, and then add the figures together to get the rough square footage. How a room is used will help you determine what wall coverings are most suitable. Get a sample or one roll and look at it in the room with your other furnishings or samples.

When it comes to wall-coverings choices, you may want to think outside the box, as they say, and consider new materials as well as traditional materials used in new and different ways. Think about new places to use them, such as decorative tile in the dining room or wood in the bathroom. You might choose an elegant linen or flocked paper for the living room. Either kind of paper texture will add richness to a room.

Professional Decorating Tips for Fireplace Mantels

Although fireplace mantels were originally used for cooking and heating, contemporary mantels have become the key focal point for setting the decorative style and atmosphere of a room. You can utilize simple accessories to enhance the room, or go all out with themed holiday decorations to transform the entire space for any special occasion.

Paying attention to basic design elements such as color, texture, balance, and size will help pull your decorations together into a beautiful display.

Getting Started

Professional designers often start decorating projects by jotting down ideas for the mood they'd like to create, and then collect an assortment of items to emphasize that style. They might not use everything they've found, but having things on hand means they can play with different combinations until hitting on the best design.

Spend some time considering how you'd like the type of event you'll be hosting. Are you having a flashy black tie cocktail party, or a relaxing springtime brunch? Maybe you'd just like to find new ways to freshen up the everyday look of a room? Either way, remember that different combinations of colors as well as the style (Victorian, modern, retro, country) of items you use will affect the overall mood of your room.

Choosing a Backdrop

To begin, you'll want to select an item to be the focal point of the display. Often this will be a painting or wall hanging that is placed on the wall just above the mantel, or even resting on the mantel. You can even change the focal point to match the occasion or season.

If you'd rather group several paintings together you'll want to only use a few items on the mantel itself to keep things from being overwhelming. The larger the item or grouping the more attention it will draw. A mirror is always a good choice to use as a large backdrop. It not only helps make the room feel larger, but reflects and draws attention to the other pieces you've placed on your mantel.

Don't forget to light your backdrop. Whether you use candles or install spot lighting, you'll want to make sure that the focal point isn't lost in the shadows.

Placement & Shape

The next step is to create a 'path' for the eye to follow, moving from the main focal point down and across the mantel. By using a variety of heights and sizes, and even texture, you can develop an interesting landscape that commands attention.

You can create a symmetrical design by centering one item on or above the mantel, and surround it with a series of identical items on either side. Each half of the mantel is a mirror image of the other. You can also layer items by height, with shorter items overlapping larger pieces. This style is often used to create a sense of formality.

Asymmetrical designs are usually the most popular, as they create a sense of motion by having different items on each side of the mantle. The key to this form is to keep the weight of items balanced visually. For instance you might have two larger objects on one end of the mantel, with a grouping of five small objects on the other end.

A radial design is created by placing objects around a central. The center item, regardless of shape, acts as an anchor. This kind of arrangement is best done similar to a symmetrical format; otherwise it can become too busy.

A layered look with lots of pieces and filler (such as greenery or garlands) works well for fall and winter, but is often too heavy for other seasons. One exception might be if your mantel is located in a large banquet or great room with high ceilings, otherwise keep things minimal by leaving breathing space between items.

Wrapping It Up

Whatever design style you select always be sure to follow safety precautions when using the fireplace. Do not place any items too close to the hearth itself, and use a protective screen to prevent ignition from sparks.

If you don't actually use your fireplace that often try placing decorations below in addition to on the mantel. You certainly wouldn't want a black void to detract from your display. A layered arrangement of white candles and greenery can be stunning for any occasion, but you could also do something as simple as a stack birch logs. Another alternative is to cover the hearth with a painted fireplace screen.

There are hundreds of options to choose from when decorating your mantel, but the same basic principles always apply. Using these designer techniques can help turn a ho-hum room into a memorable space that can easily be changed for any type of occasion.

Indoor Fountains: Enhance your Interior Décor with Wall Fountains!

With the ability to purchase a pre-designed fountain for the interior that mimic commercial copper, tempered and glass wall fountains, you can benefit from the tranquility of water flow in a work of art!

Interior decorators may choose to have a specially designed, custom-built wall fountain: something unique. And a company called Bluworld Innovations can create one. However, with many do-it-yourself homeowners and business owners, a more affordable option is to take a look at what pre-designed interior (exterior, too) fountains are available.

If you're interested in a fountain piece that hangs like a painting or tapestry, wall fountains are worth checking out. Made with a variety of materials such as slate, copper, glass, pebbles and river rock, wall fountains blend naturally, enhancing the Feng Shui as well the décor in a room. see: http://www.best-in-garden-fountains.com/indoor-wall-fountains.htm

For contemporary spaces, where fussy works of art or decorative objects are excluded and more simple and linear choices favored, these types of hanging fountains are perfect. Prices range from around $200 for a small vertical fountain to around $3,000 for large double and triple panels.

For a slightly different look, consider hanging an art wall fountain (literally). Produced by Harvey Gallery, waterfalls overlay actual oil paintings. With works that look like Picasso, Renoir and Monet, fountain pieces entitled: Koi, Vineyard, and San Francisco Nights, encompass bold and exciting painting design, as well as color. The flow of water combined with some of the fountains optional lighting (tiny holes of light within to create the feel of stars and such) creates something special.

And finally, waterwall fountains and windows, made with tempered glass. These waterfall fountains offer a distinct and elegant feel, combining an artistic contemporarily shaped water feature with natural deep-etched art images on glass.

Modern Decor Tip: Blend Not Match

Are you having a difficult time trying to match the colors of the different pieces in your modern color scheme? Want to know how Interior Designers solve this problem? I'll let you in on the secret...they blend not match. You can do it too. In fact, I recommend it because it will allow you the freedom of being able to incorporate more pieces into the color scheme and it will make your life easier too since you won't go crazy trying to make all of your decor match perfectly!

How do you determine what blends and what doesn't? A good rule of thumb is to stand back and look at the pieces in question together and to go with your gut feeling or (if you don't quite trust your eye for color) seek out a second opinion from a friend or family member with a good eye. This method is especially helpful when you're working with a pattern that may take on one general color when viewed from a distance. I also like to take a close look at each patterned piece to see which colors they're comprised of. Have fun and remember; blend not match!
